Fifth grade is completing their intermediate years and preparing for the new challenges of junior high. With the continuing support of their parents and the school community, they are becoming more independent and responsible for their academic progress. Their curriculum meets the standards of the Archdiocese of San Francisco and the State of California. Religion lessons are based on the Catechism of the Catholic Church and include doctrine, scripture and liturgy. The main focus in math is fractions and decimals with reinforcement of the basic skills including word problems. Additional lessons include measurement, prime numbers, ratios, percentages and basic algebra. In reading the students are using the skills of paraphrasing, visualizing, cause and effect, generalizing, and sequencing to identify the author's purpose and to improve reading comprehension. They analyze poetry, novels and short stories. Each month the students are required to read a book of their choice and prepare a written report critiquing the story. In English they learn the rules of grammar that are used in all their written assignments. Social Studies is an introduction to our country and the foundation of our government. They study the creation of the colonies, the struggle for survival in a new world and creation of a new nation. The major history project is a state report using research done on laptops in the classroom utilizing a new program to organize the information. Science is divided into three main categories of study: Systems in Living Things including cells, plants system and human body system, Earth Science including water on earth and weather and the solar system, and Elements and Their Combinations. The students also participate in art, music, physical education, Spanish and computer classes.
