Confirmation date, D.C. interest and more!

Hello my families of students of the class of 2017!

I hope you are all enjoying your summers! I know the students still have a little less than two months before they have to be back on campus but this upcoming eighth grade year will be a fast paced and busy one and it’s really important to have a strong organized start. For that reason, I want to make sure you all have and feel my support in making that happen. As a coach and athlete I know the importance of communication so I want to try to keep everyone as informed as possible throughout this upcoming year.

First and most important: Confirmation Date and Service Hours

The Archbishop’s office has announced the Confirmation date for the class of 2017.

This year, Confirmation will take place on Saturday October 1st, 2016 at 10:00 am

Those students being Confirmed in October must have their 50 hours of Christian service complete with forms submitted on or before Monday, September 26th, giving students 12 weeks to complete their hours if they start this weekend. Students who have completed 0 hours of service would need to complete just over 4 hours per week starting this week in order to be eligible for Confirmation. Students who do not meet the the requirement by the established deadline will not be allowed to receive the sacrament of Confirmation.

Students who helped with safety patrol are eligible to receive a maximum of 10 hours for their service.

Altar servers at weekend Masses are eligible to receive up to 30 hours for their service. Mrs. Navarro has been keeping track of students who Altar Serve at All Souls.

Opportunities for Service

Bayfront or beachfront cleanups
Raceday volunteers (5k, 10k, Half Marathon, Marathon, Bike Races etc…San Francisco Marathon and Events July 31st, Mr. Ceja is running :)
Unpaid referee, coach, umpire, etc. (Must be unpaid. Paid positions are not eligible for volunteer service. Work performed under a student’s usual responsibilities are not eligible for Christian service credit either)
First book we’ll read as a class

The first book we’ll be reading as a class is Swear to Howdy by Wendelin Van Draanen. It would be great if your student could please have a copy — digital or physical — by Monday August 29th. Below is a link for the book on amazon.

Washington, D.C. interest

In order to get an idea about whether there is enough interest for the 8th grade Washington, D.C. trip in May, please take 30 seconds to fill out a short, 3 question survey on Google Forms; the link is below.

Please save the following date for a D.C. information meeting — Thursday September 1st, 7pm in the 8th grade room.

Those are the most important points for now, but I will continue to send (shorter) updates as they become more relevant.

Confirmation Sponsor Meeting

Just a reminder that there is a mandatory Confirmation meeting
on Monday February 11th for members of  the class of 2017 who will be Confirmed in October.
 
This meeting is for Students, Parents and Sponsors.
 
The meeting will begin at 7PM in the Church Hall.
