Our group was organized through Stephanie Patton at the Oyster Point Yacht Club. Students concentrated their efforts around the South San Francisco Marina area and Bay Trail.
At the end of the event, our student volunteers collected close to 250 pounds of trash! As volunteers pick up trash from California's coast and inland waterways, they also record the amount of and types of trash they find. This data provides policy makers and the public with the information needed to make important decisions. One of the things some students noticed was the amount of small, broken up styrofoam pieces from the nearby construction sites. A lot of this material can blow into the Bay and can harm various Ecosystems and wildlife.
